Come to the opening event on the 12 September“Dae is a symbol of my relationship with Harlesden and the memories I have growing up being a part of a Brazilian community in that area”
A brand new exhibition from artist Amanda Colares Silva, also featuring new artworks from her collaborators Poker and Mike Da Gringa.
DAE OF HARLESDEN is the first character from a series that Amanda Colares Silva has been developing during her time as an artist in residence at Metroland.
Dae is one of a few characters from the series, Remnants, which is a foretelling story of the effects and realities of gentrification on residents within the borough of Brent and across London. Remnants will be further developed after Amanda’s exhibition. This particular scene is set in 2011, one year before Doomsday, a significant calendar event in the Remnants series.
Dae symbolises Amanda’s relationship with Harlesden and her memories of growing up as part of a Brazilian community in that area. Every Saturday evening, roughly between 2003 and 2012, this community would gather at the Harlesden Methodist Church building in the heart of Harlesden High Street. These pivotal years of Amanda’s life have shaped her into the artist she is today, and she has been exploring this period by creating fictional characters and sub-stories.
Dae is short for Columbidae, the scientific term for dove or pigeon. The name Dae is also a male name with the biblical meaning of ‘high’ and ‘the great one: shining,’ derived from the Latin meaning for “day” or ‘daylight.’
“DAE OF HARLESDEN” will run in the Metroland Studios gallery from 13 – 22 September.
Make sure to join us for the exhibition’s opening event on Thursday 12 September. See the show open for the first time and meet the artists and creators behind the work.
You can book your free tickets for the opening event now on eventbrite.
Amanda Colares Silva
Amanda Colares Silva is an artist and maker born and based in London. Her body of work focuses on portraying emotional experiences and story-telling through sculpture and printed costume for the body.
Through her practice she explores motifs which trigger universal emotions and personal nostalgia accompanying her physical projects with written work. This practice is an ongoing journey in universe and character creation manifested through hand painted fabrics, constructed dolls and eccentric silhouettes for the body, which are usually playful, colourful, and tactile; “exploring my own child-like curiosity towards adult-like concepts”.
Amanda has been artist in residence at UN7TSEVEN shortly after graduating from Central Saint Martins with her degree in Fashion design with print. Her work has been featured in magazines such as The Face (UK), HERO Mag (USA) and ALLA CARTA (Italy), as well as features in Vanity fairy Italia and Vogue Digital.
