Library

A growing collection of books, texts, and materials linked to Metroland’s programmes and research

The Library brings together texts connected to Metroland’s programme, including themes of place, migration, care, justice and collective practice. Focused on arts, social justice and organising, it is a working collection that grows alongside the work of the building.

It is used daily by our studio residents and is open to the public at designated times. It offers a quiet space for reading, reflection and research. Please check our opening hours or get in touch to plan a visit.

Collection

The Library holds copies of Third Text, the critical journal founded in 1987 by Rasheed Araeen, an artist, writer and publisher who has been based in Brent for several decades. Third Text has shaped debates on art, race, postcolonial thought and global art histories. Araeen’s Reading Room (2016–ongoing), first shown at Metroland, housed the first 100 issues of Third Text in his signature seating and table structures.

The collection includes books around the work of Doreen Massey, including Kilburn Manifesto whose thinking on space, place and power informs Metroland’s programme. It also holds publications of work by our studio residents, and books connecting to histories of community organising in the borough.

The Library has been made possible by generous support and gifts. We are grateful to Afterall and Four Corners Books for their donations of publications, and to our studio holders and other donors, whose books have built the collection. We also thank Vitsœ for their support in creating the Library itself.
